Our Student of the Month for June of 2010 is Jackson Rowles. Jackson has been studying piano with Tina Smith since November of 2008, and particularly enjoys having the opportunity to play duets during his lessons.

Jackson’s favorite composer is Mozart, and like Mozart he has also been composing music. Some of his masterpieces include Breakfast and A Night in the City. One of his favorite keys to work in is E Major.

Jackson’s goals are to continue studying and get better both at playing and composing. Showing a sensitivity and wisdom above and beyond his years, Jackson says, “You play with your heart, and your heart plays you.”

We look forward to seeing exciting things from Jackson in the years to come!

Our Student of the Month for May of 2010 is Sierra Adams. Sierra has been a student since March of 2007. She originally took piano lessons with Kevin Rose, and has now been studying guitar with Said Tinat for the last year.

Sierra is a fantastically consistent student, and shows perfectly how persistent efforts produce steady progress and results. This is a wonderful long-term approach to music study that helps one develop into a great musician and lifelong music lover.

Sierra particularly likes playing the classical style of guitar, including the Aaron Shearer preludes. She enjoys working with Said because of his sense of humor, and he shows her new techniques which allow her to play easier.

One of the things she is definitely going to get with her $20 Gift Certificate is a new supply of guitar picks, as she always seems to be losing them. And that, as much as anything, is the sign of a true guitarist!!

Congratulations, Sierra!!

I’m excited to let everyone know about the brand new Bulk Lesson Time discount offers now available. Based on feedback, we wanted to have some lower price discount offers available that will be easier on the bank account for those times when things are stretched a bit, which is of course common these days. We also wanted to create an option that would make it convenient to pay for lesson tuition on a monthly basis along with the regular monthly bills, which will also help make things easier to budget for many. Our new lesson offers accomplish both these goals!

The new bulk lesson time options now available are 2 Hours of Lesson Time, and 3 Hours of Lesson Time. These are in addition to the still available offers of 4 Hours of Lesson Time and 6 Hours of Lesson Time.

For those who wish to pay for lesson tuition on a monthly schedule, then these are the offers that will work based on the lesson durations.

Even though some months have 5 weeks of lessons, we usually find that there is a one week break in lessons every few months as well. So as long as the monthly payment is consistent, then there may only be a need every 3-4 months to make a slight change to the due date of payments. If you wish to choose the Monthly option, then let me know and I will work with you to pick a monthly due date that will work for you based on the current amount of lesson time on account.

You may review the specific discounts and the per-lesson rates that each of these offers provides on the Private Lessons page:

http://marylandacademyofmusic.com/private-lessons/

If you have any questions, let me know!

Students who just participated in our May Performance Workshops last week did a fantastic job and enjoyed the experience!

I have <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Columbia-MD/Maryland-Academy-of-Music/9787357899?ref=mf#!/album.php?aid=167007&id=9787357899&ref=mf" <target="_new">posted some of the pictures from the workshops in a Facebook album. If parents or other students also took some photos, then please feel free to post them or send them along to me and I’ll be happy to add them to the album.

Based on how the program has gone so far this year, we are going to start reserving the Wednesday evening workshops for adults and young adults about age 13 and older and the Saturday afternoon workshops will be for the younger students ages 5 – 12. We are also going to try and limit the workshop participants to about 12 per session.

We hope this will be an incentive for our adult students to participate, as they will know that those Wednesday evening sessions will place them with other older students.

Also, with the limit of 12 students per workshop, this makes it even more important to plan out and sign up for your workshops ASAP! If you don’t have your next workshop planned, then take a moment to sign up online right now.

Remember the key points of the program:

All students are required to participate in 2 workshops per year

Students should always know their next scheduled workshop and inform and work with their teachers to that goal

Participants will play at least 1 solo piece and 1 duet or ensemble piece

Students may now sign up online for any of the scheduled workshops this year

Since these are workshops and not formal recitals, we request that no more than 2 additional family members attend

As always, if you have any questions then please let me know or come see me when you are here for your next lesson!

About Alex

The Student of the Month for April of 2010 is Alex Callahan. Alex has been taking piano lessons with Virginia Morgan since August of 2008.

Alex is a very self-motivated student, and in his own words he, “Always tries his best.” He always arrives to his lesson a little bit early and even though his teacher may not be ready for him, he immediately goes into a free studio to warm up and get ready for his lesson. (After politely asking if he may do so first, of course!)

Alex’s favorite piece is Hickory Dickory Dock. He likes taking piano lessons with Ms. Ginny because she’s, “Fun!” When not working on his piano studies, Alex likes to play baseball. He also enjoys playing outside, and especially likes to squirt water at his brother!
