Specialized Private Instruction

Guitar Course in Brazilian Music
Instructor: Said Tinat

Sooner or later any student of guitar will come across Brazilian music and fall under its spell. As in Spain, the guitar is Brazil’s national instrument and many major Brazilian composers of the past and present (classical or popular) rely heavily on the guitar as the primary means of their musical expression. The following course is designed for those who would like to play Bossa Nova and other forms of Brazilian music in a manner consistent with the style, using the right hand fingers and not a pick. Use of tape recorders or recording devices during the class is highly encourged. As a pre-requisite, students should have a basic understanding and facility with the guitar that is usually achieved after about a year of previous study.

This course will cover:

- Study of guitar technique, right hand and left hand
- Study of musical notation
- Study of different rhythms of accompaniment (Bossa Nova, Samba, Choro, Baiao, etc.)
- Study of chords and their different voicing and inversions
- How to harmonize the same melody in many different ways
- How to accompany other musicians (vocal or instrumental)
- How to improvise in the Brazilian style
- As a solo instrument: How to play the melody and accompaniment at the same time
- General principals of harmonic embellishment, chord substitution, and arrangement
- Study of repertoire (music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao Gilberto, Baden Powell, Ary Barroso, Villa-Lobos, Egberto Gismont, Dilermando Reiss, Jorge Morel, etc.)

Course Tuition: Regular Private Lesson Rates Apply

The material in this course of study will be completed in approximately 9 weeks with 60-Minute lessons, or 12 weeks with 45-Minute lessons.

Please complete a regular private lessons registration form and specify “Brazilian Guitar” in the specific goals or special offers section.

Exploring Jazz Piano (for Non-Beginners)
Instructor: Kevin Rose

Any well-rounded pianist should learn jazz and explore one of the largest and most varied musical genres of our modern times. Kevin Rose holds a Bachelors in Jazz and Commercial Performance from Towson University and has been a freelance jazz pianist in the Baltimore/Washington area for over 15 years. He has compiled a set of materials and a study plan designed to introduce experienced piano players to the world of Jazz.

Pre-Requisites:
Students who wish to study Jazz Piano should have at least 2-3 years of previous and serious piano study. Players should have achieved very solid note-reading skills on both clefs, and have a good basic playing technique. Knowledge of some basic music theory concepts like intervals and chords is suggested. (Even if you think you may not meet these requirements, you can always take regular lessons with Kevin and then he can start introducing the jazz material when you are ready.)

Possible areas of focus for Jazz Piano study include:

- How to create your own solo piano arrangements from fake books.
- How to “comp” in a jazz combo or big band setting.
- How to improvise over jazz chord progressions.
- Study of chords and voicings.

Course Tuition: Regular Private Lesson Rates Apply

Depending on your individual areas of interest and lesson length, basic Jazz Piano material and concepts can usually be introduced in approximately 10 to 14 weeks of study. Students, of course, have the option to continue studying and exploring more advanced material in depth.
